Confusing Artificial Intelligence with Robotics

There are a lot of people who still confuse Artificial Intelligence with Robotics and treat both of them as same without actually knowing the major difference between the two, looking the two with the same lens and finding the same.

If you are still struggling with the difference and finding no difference between an Artificial intelligent machine and a Robot, it's a time to discern the two and let's have a quick understanding of the basic difference between them.

Artificial Intelligence, as the word suggests, is the intelligence that is exhibited artificially, here, by machines. Unlike human intelligence, innovatory minds have succeeded to bring intelligence into machines, using intelligence and learning as by us. Artificial intelligence has made it possible for speech to text recognition, chatbots, self-driving cars and many amazing innovations (which require a particular intelligence) that we see in the world today. While Robotics is a branch of Engineering and science involved in making and designing robots with an intention to replicate human actions so that where humans are desired to work on a repetitive task for longer periods robots could easily replace them, thus allowing more productivity in the work.

Imagine a task of wrapping up the outside body of a material in a whole day. Now, this is the task for which humans are deploying robots now.

Robots are basically designed in a way to perform a certain task repeatedly and are programmed to do so. People working in the manufacturing sector must have worked with FANUC robots, which are a class of robots used in the manufacturing industries, helping in different tasks in the manufacturing process to help increase the profitability and production goals of the company. If you haven't heard about it then you must search for it once to know its working, then It would be easier to understand.

You must have noticed that a robot is nothing else but repeatedly doing a task. Does that include intelligence? This is where AI and Robotics differ.

The above discussion is just to develop a basic understanding of AI and Robotics so that the differences could be easily understood and chances of ambiguity are removed.

While AI and Robotics are a bit different from each other, there is a scope to bridge the gap between the two and is where the concept of Artificially intelligent robots come to the place. Typically looking from the word itself, artificially intelligent robots are the robots that are made to do a particular task but with intelligence. Intelligence is involved in these robots which clearly made them fall apart from the ordinary ones which are just repeatedly doing a particular work without any intelligence.

If you have heard about Sophia, which is a humanoid robot made by the Hanson Robotics which made its first public appearance in mid-March 2016 in Austin, Texas, United States and also gained wide popularity among media is an example of an AI robot. According to the manufacturer, David Hanson, Sophia uses artificial intelligence, visual data processing and facial recognition which made it quite an intelligent robot, unlike others.
