Apple Introduces a Pocket Full of Machine Learning

The future of smartphones is here.

Ten years after the launch of the original iPhone, Apple has delivered what they consider to be the innovation set to transform the next decade of communication technology. It's easy to see why the iPhone X has generated so much excitement. As the biggest change to the iPhone design since Steve Jobs brought the device to market, the "X" takes the term "smart" phone to a whole new level.

With the introduction of an intuitive chip called the "A11 bionic neural engine", the iPhone X gives users access to their very own form of artificial intelligence, capable of around 600 billion operations per second. To put that into perspective, it's around 70% faster than the previous A10.

Unbeatable Processing Power

In many ways, the iPhone X could be seen as a celebration of Apple's journey into smartphone devices, complete with yet another market transformation. The update in computer power, intended to allow for learning algorithms on the new phone, comes after the recent release of a developer tool-set called Core ML, which allows developers to easily integrate apps with machine learning.

At present, only about one percent of the 2.4-million app market uses machine learning, but Core ML could be the solution that helps us to access this technology on a wider level, delivering more meaningful apps to the average consumer.

To help us better understand what the new tech really means for the iPhone, Apple showed off its facial recognition services for the iPhone X, which allows you to unlock your phone with just your face. Additionally, there are other third-party applications supposedly on the horizon that could work with this facial ID feature too.

While Apple isn't the first company to play with facial recognition, it's implemented some incredible technology to bring the Face ID feature to life. Plus, with about 715 million iPhones accessed around the world today, it's fair to say that Apple has plenty of market share to experiment on.

Delivering the Value of Machine Learning

While commentaries have been made on everything from the design of the new iPhone, to its various functions, perhaps the most important feature is the delivery of pocket-sized machine learning. Not so long ago, the Big Data and algorithms needed to facilitate machine learning were something that belonged exclusively to large corporations and tech labs. Yet today, open data sets, cloud computing, and other developments have meant that we can access more innovation today than ever before.

The iPhone X is representing a serious push into the future of "everyday" machine learning, where things like AI and the Internet of Things become a more standard part of our day-to-day lives. With a facial ID feature that can let you make purchases in an instant and 6 cores of processing power, it's hard to put a limit on what this new phone is capable of.

In ten years, Apple has officially transformed a basic form of communication the phone into a supercomputer, capable of learning and adjusting to the needs that we have as human beings. With so much innovation evident in the latest device, it's easy to start wondering about what the next ten years will hold for Apple, and the kind of features we'll have access to, by the time we're celebrating yet another decade in development.
