Data backup is an absolute necessity for businesses, individuals and organizations. Data backups make sure that a business will have continuity in the event of disaster striking or the unfortunate situation of data loss. The incremental backup is usually done after an initial backup which is the full backup. The incremental backup is then the backing up of all the changes which have been made since the last run. The advantages are that it is much faster than the full backup and that the storage requirements are lower. On the flip side, the restoration of data from this option is very slow.
The full backup involves the selection of the folders and the files which have to be backed up. Any subsequent result involves backing up the whole list of folders and files as well as any changes that might have been to do to them. The disadvantage is that it is time-consuming and it takes up more storage resources. Restoration of the files is straight forward and easy.
The differential backup is the storage of all changes since the last full backup. The difference between the incremental and differential backups should be noted. It is much faster upon every run. In comparison to the incremental backup, the storage space used up is more and restoration is faster. In comparison to the full backup, restoration is slower while storage space used up is less.
These are the major backup technologies and which find very common use but there exists other backup technologies that deserve mention. These are the mirror backup which when an action is done to the original file, a similar action is replicated in the backup. The full computer backup saves images of all the hard drives on the computer. The online backup which is also called the cloud backup is done with the backup sent to a storage destination over the internet. The backup destination is connected to the source and backups are done continually.
Other technologies are the FTP, the local, the remote and the offsite backups. Each has its own unique set of advantages and on the other hand, each has a unique set of disadvantages. It should be remembered that for a backup to be useful, it must be restored. The integrity of files and folders has to be maintained as well as the time stamps and permissions.
