New Study: Automation Makes Workers So Anxious that They Get Sick

Automation ran into a roadblock when an Uber self-driving car struck and killed a woman. That's very serious, and now there are news report that robotics and automation may be causing enough anxiety in another group - workers - which is leading to poorer general, mental and physical health.


This anxiety is related to job security. This used to once be a concern for factory workers as specialized robots were taking over assembly duties. However, that has changed. Software systems are increasingly causing concern for managerial and professional jobs.

Some researchers from the Villanova University and Ball State University examined country level and individual health data as well as country level business related data. They have found the following things:


-       2.38 percentage points lower general health

-       0.8 percentage points lower physical health

-       0.6 percentage points lower mental health


These numbers at first glance may seem low, however they represent an iterative effect. An increase of 20% in automation risk would double the health impact and a 30% increase would triple the impact and so on.


These are all important considerations. It is important to keep in mind that for managers and entrepreneurs, a wait for later studies which might or might not happen is not a viable alternative. Automation as you see is a growing trend, but what happens if we make our workforce less productive and sicker in the meantime?


There is of course the initial hit on profits. Moreover, there are other implications. One of them is that you scare off talent. Employees who are better at work and have options are more prone to jump the ship.


Also, you may have a problem with automation systems themselves. This kind of software frequently involves machine learning, which implies that humans have to provide a model. This is a serious problem and needs to be tackled on a war footing.
