Grasping the next generation of robotics
Amazon, global online retail giant organized their Amazon Picking Challenge wherein they challenged roboticists to create a robot that is capable of picking and stowing twelve products from a shelf into a bag. The Shadow Robot Company, which is manufacturer and designer of anthropomorphic robot hands, addressed it using precision bearing specialist, SMB Bearings.
Amazon used the following challenge since this is perhaps the only area of their warehousing process, which is not currently mechanized because of the huge variety of objects to be packed.
Grasping poses a problem in robotics for many industries. It is not just about picking the object but also grasping it well and also ensuring that each grasp is accurate for the object that is being picked.
Rich Walker, the managing director of The Shadow Robot Company said that a lot of people have come up to them asking about how they could improve robotic grasping. The market has pushed them to improve the technology.
The standard industrial grippers are designed to pick up one thing, move it and then place it down. If you have two different sets of objects, you would require two different grippers in order to achieve the task. Modern manufacturers produce a wide variety of products, which often have custom finishes. Single use tooling is no longer enough to keep up with the increasing demand. There is dire need of tooling which is easily adaptable and capable of picking up different types of objects.
As part of this new design process, the company needed specific bearings that have very tight tolerances in dimensional accuracy. Therefore the team contacted SMB Bearings since their business is well known for vast supply of non-standard bearings and consistency.
Using this, the Shadow Robot Company addressed the Amazon's challenge and put their Smart Grasping system to test. The Smart Grasper recognized the objects and grasped them with ease. This showcased the success of their smart engineering and high precision bearings. It helps give the Amazon Giant what it badly needed.
