IoT in Smart Transportation System

Jun 7, 2018 | 702 Views

Transportation is the primary network that makes modern society run smoothly. The next generation intelligent transportation systems will optimize the movement of people and goods, improving economics, public safety, and the environment. Life would be annoyed without public transportation, and without the trucks, ships, and cargo airlines that deliver food, gasoline, and other requirements. Economy grows, simultaneously demand upswings especially for public transportation.
According to International Union of Railways (UIC), "the demand for long-distance rail journeys is already growing in many countries" many of which are considering high-speed rail systems. In less populated regions, meanwhile, rail transport is expected to provide "the best value for the money" to permit mobility.

Nowadays customers today expect a good experience free from unnecessary delays, and public transportation has not historically performed well on that measure. According to the UIC report, the rail industry is planning to develop advanced feature in cost effective way to increase safety, security and improve the performance by eliminating the barriers.

Report includes the main goals for rail systems:
  • Enhanced Automation: Focus on full integration of intelligent communication technology (ICT) and applications between the user, the vehicle, traffic management services, and operation.
  • Adaptability: Allow operators to respond in a flexible manner to changes in user's demands and constraints.
  • Resilience: Focus on ensuring service levels are maintained even under extreme operating conditions.

Using IoT for transportation safety and Automating:
On predefined schedules, track signals and other operational rules generally the train operators believes to ensure a safe journey. But (PTC) positive train control system consist IoT enabled track equipment and analytics, increases situational awareness etc. which allows the operator to see the state of the track. As the public transport is one of the safest sources of travelling.

Better fare collection with the IoT:
This comes from Genfare, and this is the first mechanical fare collection device. It created a cloud-based platform called Genfare Link to support a wide variety of fare payment forms which includes smart cards containing magnetic stripe tickets and smartphones. Its aim is to help out the small and medium transportation agencies to compete in a market where customers expect mobile payments and smart cards.

Genfare Link uses Red Hat Enterprise Linux as a foundation for the data architecture.  Red Hat JBoss Fuse is an integration platform which allows real-time monitoring and collects data from remote devices or fareboxes and sending it to a central cloud platform. This also reduces maintenance time for ticket machines.  Such architecture can be used by smart cities to reduce congestion on roads and reroute traffic, fight crime with intelligent lighting and gunshot detection technology

The next wave of intelligent transportation systems must gather, analyze, and act upon massive volumes of data in a highly efficient and reliable manner. Red Hat can help you address stringent IoT performance demands, quickly and cost effectively, with our smart transportation systems architecture and solution components.
