The crime rates are increasing all around the world. A matter of concern for the governments and police department is finding ways to reduce and prevent crime. Companies and cities around the globe have already started working with AI to reduce crimes and respond quickly to the ones currently happening. According to a law enforcement study most of the crimes are predictable; all it requires is to find the pattern that is useful. Development in Machine Learning has provided companies and law enforcement with the technology to analyze the terabytes of data sort it out and find the pattern of predictable crime.
Cortica is an Israeli company having its roots in security and AI research, the company recently formed partnership in India with Best Group analyzing the data streaming from the CCTV cameras in public areas. Its main goal is to the safety of people in public places like the streets, bus stops and railway stations.
Areas that are using AI

  • Bomb Detection
According to expert's robots should be able to deactivate bombs in the near future. The numbers of cases a robot has been able to detect a bomb has been encouraging.
  • Surveillance
AI-powered drones are used to control crowds by deploying pepper spray and paintballs or by making announcements. Drones are fitted with cameras and microphones. Drones, it is believed, will soon be able to identify people with criminal records with facial recognition software and predict crimes with machine learning software.
  • Social media
Criminals have been able to track down the criminals who were using hostages to promote different kind of crimes such as drug promotions, selling of drugs and illegal prostitution. An AI helped law enforcements to track down such crimes. The AI searched for millions of direct and indirect hash tags meant to promote drugs and passed on the information to police.
  • Interviewing suspect's
An AI-powered chatbot in a university in Enschede, Netherlands is being trained to interview suspects and extract information. Expectations from the bot are to examine the suspect, ask questions and detect from the answering patterns and psychological cues whether the suspect is being truthful.
  • Companies and banks
Companies are using AI to prevent and detect everything from routine employee theft to insider trading. Many banks and large corporations employ artificial intelligence to detect and prevent fraud and money laundering.

Can AI predict the future crimes?
AI has been able to make prediction surprisingly accurate from the data it has been provided. Scientists are already working on technologies that provide authorities with precise information about when and where and who is about to commit a crime. AI is being applied to video surveillance systems, promising to thwart criminal activity not by detecting crimes and progress buy by identifying a crime before it even happens. The goal is to prevent violence such as sexual assaults.

Currently, there are many challenges confronting the involvement of AI systems in crime management. However, it is worth the effort to engage AI in crime prevention and control. The nature of crime and terrorist activities is evolving to become more sophisticated every day, and purely human involvement is no longer enough to tackle such problems. In this context, it may be important to note that AI will not replace human beings, but will complement them. AI systems can be fast, accurate and relentless and it is these qualities that law enforcement agencies will want to exploit. As of right now, it seems that AI will continue to become even more prominent in law enforcement and crime prevention.
